The Lou Nuer Community Development International (LNCDI) was founded on the principles of unity, resilience, and cultural preservation to serve the needs of the Nuer diaspora, with much of our work rooted in Omaha, Nebraska. For decades, Omaha has become a beacon for Nuer families seeking a new beginning, offering a space to rebuild lives after displacement, conflict, and migration. As one of the largest hubs for Nuer people in the United States, Omaha represents both a new home and a continuation of our collective journey. It is here that our stories converge, and our efforts take shape.
The Nuer community has a rich history of migration, marked by both challenges and triumphs. From our ancestral homelands in South Sudan to cities across the globe, we have carried with us a deep sense of cultural pride, spiritual resilience, and a commitment to building strong, vibrant communities. The LNCDI was born out of a desire to honor that heritage while addressing the modern-day needs of our people—both in the United States and across the global diaspora.
Our work is driven by a shared vision: to empower the Nuer community through education, advocacy, and opportunity. We are dedicated to creating pathways for cultural preservation, leadership development, financial and health literacy, and community well-being. Our programs focus on addressing the unique challenges faced by refugees and immigrants, while also celebrating the strengths and traditions that make us who we are.
In Omaha, we are building bridges between generations, connecting our elders’ wisdom with the ambitions of our youth. From cultural events that preserve our language and traditions to financial and health literacy workshops that equip families with the tools to thrive, we are committed to empowering every member of our community. By fostering partnerships with local, state, and federal organizations, as well as private entities, we amplify our reach and impact.
The LNCDI is more than an organization—it is a collective movement. It is a space where Nuer voices are heard, stories are shared, and futures are shaped. We believe that by coming together, we can overcome obstacles, celebrate achievements, and ensure that the Nuer legacy continues to thrive in Omaha and beyond.
At the Lou Nuer Community Development International (LNCDI), our mission is to:
